We want to keep our children safe and have the most efficient morning drop off that is possible at our busy location. The Safety Valet program is a City of Los Angeles program that Ivanhoe was fortunate to obtain in 2005. The guidelines and route map listed on the safety valet map page were developed with the DOT and LAPD. They are intended to supersede normal traffic flow while the line is running to create better safety through common sense and community cooperation. When the line is running, please cooperate with the program and our wonderful volunteers by following the guidelines.

Families or staff who need to park:

While the valet line is running, please avoid driving on Herkimer altogether if you are not dropping children in the line. We are trying to keep traffic in front of the school to a minimum. Please use only the surrounding streets to find parking. However, If you do turn onto Herkimer from Rowena, you must stay in the correct traffic lane and drive through the line even if you are not using it. Please DO NOT drive up the other side of Herkimer to avoid the line.

And, please do not turn LEFT from Rowena onto Herkimer. Left turning vehicles are dangerous at the pedestrian crossing during the busy traffic time. Please go around the school if necessary and follow the traffic flow patterns as indicated on the map.

Pedestrians:

Please cross Herkimer ONLY at the two official intersections (Rowena at the bottom and Waverly at the top).

Please do not cross Herkimer from the alleys or anywhere else in the middle of the street. The valet route and guidelines are intended to separate pedestrians from moving vehicles as much as possible. It is especially dangerous to walk through the valet line which is designed to be constantly moving. The job of the valet volunteers is solely to assist the children out of the cars and keep the line moving quickly to prevent dangerous traffic back-ups onto Rowena. They are not trained as crossing guards and cannot direct traffic for pedestrians. 

Drivers, when using the Safety Valet Line:

Please let children out of the car only when you have reached a Valet. If you let them jump out early it slows down the flow of the line and distracts the Valets.

Please drive all the way through the Safety Valet lane and exit at the top. Please do not pull out of the lane early and enter the oncoming traffic lane to your left.

Please enter the line from ROWENA via a RIGHT turn. We are trying to create a one way circular flow of traffic around the school. Left turning vehicles are dangerous at the pedestrian crossing and they slow down the drop off line. If necessary, please go around the school via Waverly to get onto Rowena heading the right direction.

Please DO NOT try to enter the line by turning left onto Herkimer from the alley across the street. This is distracting for the Valets and particularly dangerous when there are pedestrians around.

Please ask your children to have their backpacks and other belongings ready so we can get them out of the car quickly and keep the line moving. If possible, it is helpful if they are sitting on the right side of the car for a quick exit.
